WP Virtual Learning Corp. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Wellesley Partners. We focus on the development of Virtual Immersive Learning (VIL) for the healthcare industry. This technology application exploits the capabilities of the “serious gaming” industry, first developed for the aviation and military sectors, to address the critical training needs of healthcare. Our research shows there are a myriad of critical healthcare applications and we have already developed use cases that have quickly gained market acceptance.
Today, WP Virtual Learning Corp. is focused on four market applications:
Informed Decision Making
Managing and reducing high-end utilization of inpatient beds, elective surgeries, and emergency department visits depends, in large part, on the partnership between patients, families, and clinicians in goal setting, treatment planning, making choices, and progress monitoring. Patients, families, and clinicians vary considerably in their skill and comfort with the communication necessary for that partnership. The tension between the time available and needed to share and absorb the wealth of information exchanged compounds the challenge. In addition, the time needed to educate a critical mass or all of the stakeholders in such communication can be prohibitive. WP Virtual Learning’s VIL provides an ideal platform for learning about general informed decision-making skills and for managing specific scenarios. These scenarios include costly, high volume surgeries such as joint replacements, end-of-life choices, chronic care management, lifestyle changes, and routine preparation of patients and families for office visits. VIL can incorporate decision aids and provide practice space for learners to engage on their own schedule and allows organizations to scale learnings.
Behavior & Communication
Our founder, Tim Sullivan, has provided executive coaching to literally thousands of healthcare administrators and physicians. Virtual Immersive Learning allows us to scale the models, concepts and writings he has developed for our clients for use in large scale executive coaching engagements as well as in our organizational development consulting practice. Using VIL we have modeled complex interpersonal conversations for users to experience a world where they can practice the concepts they’ve learned without experiencing the real life negative outcomes that might ensue from “practicing” in the workplace.
Clinical Process and Decision Making
Today’s healthcare setting is a complicated array of many people, with quite specific duties, working as a team to deliver quality care in a safe environment. Many of today’s diagnostic and treatment options include the use of sophisticated technology. Virtual Immersive Learning provides the consistent, high quality, self-paced training that organizations need to deliver invaluable new content to its clinical resources.
Most organizations have succeeded in meeting meaningful use requirements for EHR usage. The transition for users was accomplished with much classroom time. Costs for classrooms, overtime for coverage, instructors, and the variability of what happens within each classroom leave much to be desired. Virtual Immersive Learning can be structured by role so staff only learns what they need to learn and in the manner in which they actually use the technology. With better training, post “go live” staff efficiency does not plummet and users can quickly move on to learning the value added content that makes the technology investment even more worthwhile. Plus, since our VIL training is available on demand, new employees and employees needing refresher training can utilize the training as often as necessary with no additional costs.
